Medina County Overview
Medina County Domestic Relations Court
The Medina County Court of Common Pleas has a Domestic Relations Division that handles all family law matters in the county. This covers divorce, dissolution, legal separation, annulment, child custody, parenting time, child support, and spousal support. Under ORC Chapter 3105, Ohio allows 11 grounds for divorce. The most common is incompatibility. A plaintiff must have been an Ohio resident for at least six months before filing. Medina County is a growing suburban area, and the court sees a steady caseload of family matters each year.
Property division in Medina County follows ORC 3105.171. The court starts with equal division of marital property. If an equal split would be unfair, the court adjusts based on factors like the length of the marriage, each spouse's assets and debts, custody of children, and the tax impact of dividing specific property. Separate property such as inheritance, pre-marital assets, and gifts stays with the original owner. Spousal support under ORC 3105.18 gets decided after the property split is done. The court looks at income, earning ability, marriage length, and the standard of living during the marriage.
Filing fees for divorce cases typically range from $200 to $400. Fee waivers exist for those who cannot pay. You file a petition showing your income and expenses, and the judge decides. Mandatory parenting classes are required when minor children are part of a divorce or custody case in Medina County.
