The Allen County Court of Common Pleas is the main trial court for the county. It has four divisions: General, Domestic Relations, Probate, and Juvenile. That same division handles child custody, parenting time, child support, and spousal support matters. Under ORC Chapter 3105, Ohio law sets out 11 grounds for divorce. The plaintiff must be an Ohio resident for at least six months before they can file. Mediation services are available through the court for families who want to try to settle disputes outside of a full trial.

The General Division takes civil cases over $15,000 and felony criminal matters. For anything tied to divorce or custody, the Domestic Relations Division is your stop.

The Allen County Clerk of Courts is the official record keeper for the Court of Common Pleas. This office maintains all court records from the General Division and Domestic Relations Division. Every pleading, motion, and order filed in a case goes through the Clerk. Staff handle filing, docketing, and keeping records safe for as long as the law says they must.

Public access to Allen County family court records is open during business hours. You can ask for copies of any public court document. Standard copies run $0.10 per page. Certified copies cost an extra $1.00 per document on top of the page fee. The office takes cash, check, or money order for payment. You can make requests in person, by mail, or by phone. Ohio's Public Records Act (ORC 149.43) gives anyone the right to ask for public records. You do not have to give your name or say why you want the files.

The Clerk also runs the CourtView online system. You can search cases by party name, case number, or date range. The system covers civil, criminal, and domestic relations cases. It is free to use and available from any computer with internet access.

Note: If the Clerk denies a records request, they must tell you why in writing and cite the legal basis for the denial.

Allen County Probate Court Records

The Allen County Probate Court sits at 301 North Main Street in Lima. This court handles estate administration, guardianships, adoptions, marriage licenses, name changes, and mental health commitment cases. It is a division of the Court of Common Pleas, so the Probate Judge is part of the same court system that handles divorce and custody.

Marriage licenses are issued Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Both parties must show up in person with valid photo ID. The fee is $50.00. Certified copies of marriage certificates cost $2.00 each. The Probate Court also has an online case search system where you can look up marriage license records from 1995 to the present. That is a useful tool if you need to verify a marriage date or find a record from the last few decades.

The Lima Municipal Court serves the City of Lima and surrounding areas. This court handles misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic violations, civil cases up to $15,000, and small claims up to $6,000. It does not handle divorce or custody, but it does deal with some family-related matters like protection orders and certain domestic violence charges at the misdemeanor level.

Allen County Juvenile Court

The Allen County Juvenile Court handles cases involving minors. This includes delinquency, unruly behavior, abuse, neglect, and dependency cases. The court also has jurisdiction over custody and visitation when the parents were never married. Paternity cases that establish who the legal father is often start here too.

Under ORC Chapter 2151, juvenile records are generally confidential. You cannot just walk in and ask for them the way you can with adult court records. A court order is usually needed to access sealed juvenile files. The court does release some information in cases involving serious offenses, but for most family matters the records stay private to protect the child.
